The Stardust Resort and Casino was located on the Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada, covering 60 acres. Tony Cornero started the project in 1954, but after his death in 1955, his brother took over. In January 1958, Rella Factor purchased the Stardust and completed it. It opened on July 2, 1958, as the world’s largest hotel, with 1,065 rooms and a 16,500 sq ft casino. The adjacent Royal Nevada hotel-casino was added to the Stardust in 1959. A nine-story hotel addition was finished in 1964, and during the 1960s, the resort operated an off-site country club and a raceway. After changing ownership multiple times, the Argent Corporation bought the Stardust in 1974, adding a sportsbook in 1975, which became very popular. In 1976, a state investigation revealed skimming operations at the resort. It was sold again in 1979, and another investigation in 1983 found skimming still ongoing. The Boyd family acquired the Stardust in 1985 and kept it until it closed. In its final years, the Stardust had an 85,000 sq ft casino and 1,552 rooms but struggled to compete with newer resorts. In January 2006, Boyd Gaming announced the closure and demolition of the Stardust to make way for the ill-fated Echelon Place project. The Stardust closed on November 1, 2006; its towers were imploded in March 2007. The popular Stardust roadside sign was donated to the Las Vegas Neon Museum. The property is now home to Resorts World Hotel and Casino.
