The El Morocco Motel and Casino opened in 1964 between the La Concha Motel and the Peppermill Restaurant on the Las Vegas Strip. It was notable for having a Bank of Las Vegas branch in its lobby, an entirely new banking experience in 1964. Designed by Paul Revere Williams, El Morocco’s Googie architecture closely resembled its sister property, La Concha, both owned by Lorenzo Doumani and designed by Williams. Restaurateur Jack Dennison launched his popular Copper Cart restaurant in the El Morocco, later called the Carving Cart. In the 1970s, the bank was replaced with a casino, and in addition to the restaurant and casino, El Morocco’s amenities included a coffee shop, cocktail lounge, and beauty salon. The El Morocco operated through the 1990s, with the casino becoming a gift shop in 1983 and the lobby a Korean restaurant. By 2000, El Morocco transformed into a souvenir store and Internet cafe. Parts of it were demolished in 2006, and the remainder demolished in 2008. The site, now owned by The Siegel Group, is vacant, with potential redevelopment plans for a hotel/casino.
