The Showboat Hotel and Casino was a distinctive landmark in Las Vegas history, known for blending Southern charm with the excitement of classic Vegas entertainment. Opening its doors in September 3,1954 at 2800 Fremont Street, the Showboat brought a unique riverboat theme to the desert—a tribute to the paddle-wheelers of the Mississippi River, complete with vintage décor and a strong sense of hospitality. While it catered to a local and budget-conscious crowd, the property didn’t skimp on amenities. The Showboat quickly became popular for its 100-lane bowling center—one of the largest in the world at the time, making it a key destination for Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) tournaments and various sporting events. The hotel boasted over 400 rooms at its peak, along with a casino, multiple dining options, a showroom for live entertainment, and later, a movie theater. The Showboat’s modest charm and off-Strip location gave it a strong local following, especially among Las Vegas residents who preferred a quieter, less tourist-driven atmosphere. In the 1990s, the property underwent a rebranding and was renamed the Castaways Hotel and Casino. While attempts were made to modernize the venue, it struggled to keep up with the fast-paced development of newer resorts. The hotel eventually closed in 2000, and the building was demolished in 2006. Today the land is home to Showboat Park Apartments.
