Opened on November 7, 1941, the El Cortez Hotel and Casino is a venerable downtown Las Vegas gaming venue located a block from Las Vegas Boulevard and the famous Fremont Street Experience. Although small, El Cortez offers slots, table games, and race and sports books. El Cortez is among the oldest casino-hotel properties in Las Vegas, along with the nearby Golden Gate Hotel and Casino. Casino owner and operator, Jackie Gaughan, bought El Cortez in 1963 and owned it until 2008, when it was sold to Ike Gaming. The “El Co,” as it is called, has a reputation for providing good value for gamblers in downtown Las Vegas. On February 22, 2013, the structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
