Description

Perched at 2440 Las Vegas Boulevard South—directly across from the Sahara—Jolly Trolley Casino sprang to life in 1977, transforming a former shopping center space into a bold, entertainment-packed venue. Its colorful, trolley-car–shaped marquee wasn’t just for show—it encapsulated the fun, energetic spirit inside, earning it its playful name. The casino replaced Honest John’s and the Centerfold Casino, embracing an adult-themed atmosphere with enticing slogans like “Burlesque is Back – Naked But Nice” and “Macho Male Strippers – Ladies Only.” But Jolly Trolley wasn’t just eye-catching—it was strategic. Its “Fun Book,” valued at $18, offered complimentary meals, drinks, hot dogs, phone calls, and even valet parking, all redeemable at the redemption booth. These perks proved popular—one employee recalled that free valet parking actually resulted in zero tips! Inside, gaming featured single‑deck blackjack (with a pit‑boss gimmick of flashing hole cards, much to players’ amusement). And if burgers were your thing, Jolly Trolley claimed to serve “Las Vegas’ Biggest Hamburger” for just 99½ cents. Patrons also found slot‑machine souvenirs, wooden‑nickel tokens, and collectible $1 and $5 chips—pieces now sought by vintage casino memorabilia collectors. The property was reputedly under mob influence, in cahoots with owners like Don Pettit and frontman Paul Bendetti—the infamous mobster Tony Spilotro even used to patronize the place. The FBI’s surveillance and mob ties highlight the casino’s edgy reputation. When Jolly Trolley shuttered in 1981, it paved the way for Bonanza Gift Shop—branded “The World’s Largest Gift Shop” and remains an enduring staple of the Strip. Yet the Jolly Trolley-era remains a lively footnote in Vegas lore—a cheeky blend of gambling, adult entertainment, bargain eats, and mob-era mystery.
