The property began life as part of the Royal Inns of America chain, with construction on the Royal Inn and Casino beginning August 1, 1969. The Royal Inn opened on April 19, 1970, at a cost of $3 million, on 6 acres just east of the Las Vegas Strip. The 12-story hotel had 200 rooms and was considered small by Las Vegas standards even at that time. In 1972, businessman and casino owner, Michael Gaughan, along with Frank Toti took over the gaming operations, managing the casino throughout the decade. In 1979, Horn & Hardart bought the Royal Inn for $17 million and rebranded it as the Royal Americana Hotel by late 1980. After facing significant losses, Horn & Hardart closed the hotel in 1982, but the casino reopened later to maintain the gaming license, but with limited gaming offerings. An investment group took over the Royal Inn and after a remodel, relaunched as the Paddlewheel on November 21, 1983. The land is now vacant and owned by developer Lorenzo Doumani. In 2019 Doumani announced plans to build a non-gaming high-rise hotel known as Majestic Las Vegas. He has faced delays several times; construction has yet to begin as of 2024.
