Venue Description

The Hotel Sahara opened on October 7, 1952, with an African Sahara theme and was the sixth resort on the Las Vegas Strip. The hotel was situated on 20 acres, had 500 employees, and included 240 hotel rooms with patios or balconies. Amenities featured a casino, an 85-foot bar, and two restaurants. The Sahara changed ownership several times over the years but closed on May 16, 2011, after 58 years of operation. A large liquidation sale followed in June 2011, featuring over 600,000 items and attracting many buyers. Items that did not sell were donated, including the camel sign, which went to Las Vegas’s Neon Museum. The property is now home to a subsequent, but unrelated, Sahara Hotel and Casino, which opened August 29, 2019.
