Venue Description

The Sands Hotel and Casino was a famous mainstay on the Las Vegas Strip, operating from 1952 until 1996. Designed by Wayne McAllister, it featured a notable 56-foot sign and was the seventh resort on the Strip. Opened by Mack Kufferman, it initially had 200 rooms and became renowned for hosting entertainers like the Rat Pack and Jerry Lewis. Frank Sinatra debuted there in 1953 and later purchased a share of the Sands. The hotel expanded in 1966 and was eventually acquired by Howard Hughes. Its final owners were Sheldon Adelson, Richard Katzeff, Ted Bernard, Irwin Chafetz, and Jordan Shapiro. After buying out his partners, Adelson shut down the Sands to build a new resort. On November 26, 1996, the Sands was demolished, and The Venetian was built in its place.
