Description

The Sans Souci Hotel and Casino, located at 3320 Las Vegas Boulevard South, was situated across from the Sands Hotel and Casino, a prime location on the Las Vegas Strip. The property began as the Mountain View Auto Court in the 1930s, offering travelers a place to stay along U.S. Highway 91, later known as the Las Vegas Strip. In 1939, it was renamed the Sans Souci, a name that become synonymous with Las Vegas hospitality in the coming decades. In 1955, the original auto court was demolished and replaced with a two-story, 82-room hotel, marking the establishment’s transformation into a full-fledged hotel. The casino and showroom were added in 1957, enhancing the property’s appeal to both tourists and locals. The Sans Souci featured a 400-seat showroom and was known for its live entertainment, including performances like “Midnight in Havana” and “Midnight in Paris,” as well as burlesque comedy acts in the Round Room. The hotel boasted a dining hall capable of seating 160 guests and serving up to 2,000 meals daily, earning it the moniker “The Jewel of the Strip.” Despite its initial success, the Sans Souci faced financial difficulties. By 1962, the hotel had closed and filed for bankruptcy. The property was subsequently sold to Ben Jaffe, who reopened it as the Castaways Hotel and Casino in 1963. The Castaways operated under various ownerships, including a purchase by Howard Hughes in the mid-1960s, until it was sold to Golden Nugget Inc. in 1987. The hotel was eventually demolished to make way for The Mirage, which opened in 1989. Today, the site of the Sans Souci Hotel and Casino property is now home to the upcoming Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
