The Tropicana Las Vegas was a casino hotel in Paradise, Nevada, which opened on April 4, 1957. The resort was the most expensive in Las Vegas at the time and occupied 35 acres with a 44,570 sq ft casino and 1,467 hotel rooms. The Tropicana was home to various live entertainment, including Folies Bergere, the longest-running show in Las Vegas history. The property underwent multiple ownership changes, including mob connections and a massive skimming operation. In 1989, Aztar Corporation bought the property, which was later sold to Columbia Sussex. In 2007, Onex Corporation bought the property and in 2011 undertook a $180 million renovation. In 2020, Tropicana was sold to GLPI. Bally’s Corporation then purchased the Tropicana and leased the land. Bally’s and GLPI reached a redevelopment agreement with the MLB’s Oakland Athletics in 2023, leading to the Tropicana’s demolition to make way for a baseball stadium and hotel casino resort. The Tropicana closed after a 67-year run on April 2, 2024, falling just two days shy of its 68th birthday. The property is now the future home of New Las Vegas Stadium and Bally’s Hotel and Casino resort with construction scheduled to begin in June 2025 and completion in January 2028.
